Happy Summer!
Yes, it’s that time of year again. We’re taking July and August off—not to eat pizza and drink hard seltzer (although maybe?), but to read residency applications and apply for grants. To that end, a few things:
During July and August, we won’t be publishing a poem every weekday and our weekly Shout Outs. We’ll resume both the first full week of September. BUT! We are still reading. We remain open year-round for regular submissions, expedited submissions, and feedback submissions. Our response time will be a tad bit slower, so please don’t get upset if you hear back from us a day or two (or more) later than average.
Residency applications are open until July 15 at midnight EST! Enjoy a four-day, three-night stay at The Betsy-South Beach Hotel while you participate in poetry events with local poets and the SWWIM Every Day Editors! Apply here.
We’re now officially a 501(c)(3)! We’ve been working all year to become a verified nonprofit—and thanks to a very generous donor, we finally reached that goal. As many of you know, we’ve been self-funded from the beginning, abetted by the generosity of The Betsy and a handful of donations, for which we’re extremely grateful. Being an official nonprofit instead of an LLC with a fiscal sponsor opens up a ton of possibilities.
Welcome to Emma Trelles, our new Contributing Editor-at-Large! The ninth Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara, Emma was born in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents. She is the author of Tropicalia (University of Notre Dame Press, 2011), winner of the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize and a finalist for Foreword/Indies poetry book of the year, as well as the chapbook Little Spells (GOSS183, 2008). She is the recipient of fellowships and honors from CantoMundo, Letras Latinas, and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. Emma curates the Mission Poetry Series and, in April 2022, became the series editor of the Alta California Chapbook Prize for Latinx poets, which selects two chapbooks for publication in bilingual editions through Gunpowder Press. We’re delighted to have her on the SWWIM team! For more about Emma’s accomplishments and to read some of her work, see here.
